The Flaming Star Nebula
This has been sitting on my hard drive for quite a while now. It is my first (and only, so far) image taken with a Hydrogen Alpha filter – An Ha filter only lets through the light that comes from Hydrogen gas that has gained an electron – it gives off Photons of a very specific wavelength (I think that’s about as much as I understand about Ha light!). These filters are great for cutting through light pollution and moon glow and allow for some nice high contrast images.
So, the Flaming Star Nebula, what is it? It is an emmision nebula in Auriga, the bright central hot blue star is responsible for the energey that is exciting the Hydrogen Gas. It is about 1500 light years from us and around 5 Light Years accross.
